Line 12:
“I cannot hide what I am” he can’t speak
properly, speak in social manner, he likes that he is different, he’d rather
have freedom and his insignificant power than do what someone else says. This is
also backed up by “I had rather be a
canker in hedge than a rose in his grace”
Lines 25-34:
This
section is all about how trapped Don John and his lack of power, he compares
this to numerous animals (dog, horse and
a bird) showing how this feeling of being trapped has reduced him to less
than human. He says that he has been “muzzled”
which is his comparison to him being a dog, he is unable to talk freely and this
is representative of how powerless he is as language is linked with power. He
goes on to say he has “decreed not to
sing in his cage” singing is a use of language, a display of power, and he
refuses to do what is wanted of him. In a way this is the only power he was, the
power to refuse what others want of him.
